A MESSAGE TO ALL MEN
WE DO NOWHERE NEAR ENOUGH TO STOP THE THREAT TO FEMALE SAFETY.
It’s true that not all men are a threat to female safety. But it’s also true that - as men - we do nowhere near enough to show we’re not a threat or stop the threat. Our message is clear:
It’s not up to women to have a ‘stay safe’ strategy as they walk our streets.
It’s not up to women to walk with friends or organise a lift.
It’s not up to women to wear trainers. To carry pepper spray. To learn self-defence.
It’s not up to women to stay in and stop doing the things they love.
It is not up to women to keep themselves safe.
IT’S UP TO MEN.
We need to understand the impact our actions can have.
And do something about it.
“For the last five years, I have been doing Be Military Fit classes every week. This isn’t so I can stay fit. It’s so I have the strength and speed to stay safe. Just in case. 500 hours & £3,500 just to keep myself safe.”
Sarah, London
We have identified six simple actions men can take - right now - to help women feel safer.
And to spread awareness of these actions we are teaming up with pubs, bars, restaurants and gyms. We know, of course, that these actions alone won’t end toxic masculinity. Alone they won’t end violence towards women.
But we must start taking responsibility.
It’s too easy for people to try and solve the problem by finding new ways for women to keep themselves safe. Women are - and never have been - the source of the problem. The action and inaction of men is. All men.
We all need to step up.
